Limited edition prints of the original, unique artwork, created after my tribute mural which was displayed on Dudley Street, Birmingham, UK from January 2016 until January 2019.
This portrait was inspired by Bowie's performance in "The Man Who Fell to Earth" (1976), and features a quote from his character, Thomas Jerome Newton, which reads -
"Well, I'm not a scientist but I know all things begin and end in eternity"
This film filled me with awe as a child, and along with his music, became a great comfort to me as a teenager while struggling with my mental health. Bowie's work, words and originality continued to be a big influence on my psyche and motivation as I stepped into the creative arts myself. His powerful advice from a 1997 interview has echoed in my brain for 29 years -
"Never play to the gallery… Always remember that the reason that you initially started working is that there was something inside yourself that you felt that if you could manifest in some way, you would understand more about yourself and how you coexist with the rest of society. I think it’s terribly dangerous for an artist to fulfil other people’s expectations — they generally produce their worst work when they do that.
If you feel safe in the area that you’re working in, you’re not working in the right area. Always go a little further into the water than you feel you’re capable of being in. Go a little bit out of your depth, and when you don’t feel that your feet are quite touching the bottom, you’re just about in the right place to do something exciting."
I don't claim to be his biggest fan, but I will always have the greatest respect for him as an artist, and gratitude for his creations that have brought me, and countless others, so much joy and wonder.
A portion of the proceeds from the sale of these prints will be donated to The What Centre.
This charity organisation helped me a teenager and has been providing counselling, support, and information services for young people within Dudley Borough since 1985.
